How do you wash lifting straps?

How do you wash lifting straps?

Yes, lifting straps can be cleaned, but the gentlest method is usually to wipe them down or hand wash them carefully with a damp cloth, lukewarm water, and a small amount of mild soap.

Avoid washing machines, tumble dryers, strong heat, and aggressive cleaning agents unless the care instructions for the specific model explicitly permit it.

After each workout, the straps should be taken out of the bag and air-dried completely. This reduces the accumulation of sweat and odor and helps the materials maintain their shape.

How to clean lifting straps

1. Check the straps

First, inspect the material, stitching, and the loop around the wrist.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Frayed or thin areas.
  • Loose stitching.
  • Cracks and permanent creases.
  • Damage from contact with sharp bars or handles.

Cleaning cannot repair a damaged pair. If the construction seems weakened, the straps should not be used for heavy lifts.

2. Remove loose chalk and dirt

Remove loose training chalk, dust, and dirt with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid rubbing hard, as this can work particles further into the material.

If there is a lot of chalk on the strap, you can gently brush it away with a soft brush.

3. Use a damp cloth

Dampen a clean cloth with lukewarm water and wring it out thoroughly. Wipe the entire strap, the area around the wrist, and the places that have been in contact with the bar.

For ordinary sweat and light dirt, water is often sufficient.

4. Use mild soap if needed

If the straps are still dirty or smell, you can add a small amount of mild and fragrance-free soap to the water.

Apply the soapy water with the cloth and gently work the material. Avoid soaking the straps, especially if the model consists of several different materials.

5. Remove soap residue

Wipe with a new cloth, dampened only with clean water. Continue until visible soap residue is removed.

Soap left in the material can make the strap stiff or irritate the skin during training.

6. Shape the straps

Straighten the straps after cleaning so they dry in their natural shape. Avoid twisting them hard, as this can strain materials and stitching.

7. Let them air dry completely

Lay or hang the straps in a place with normal air circulation. They must be completely dry before being put back in the gym bag or used again.

Avoid:

  • Tumble dryer.
  • Radiator.
  • Hair dryer.
  • Direct, strong sun for extended periods.
  • Other forms of high heat.

Can lifting straps be washed in a washing machine?

As a rule, we do not recommend machine washing StrapIt.

A washing machine exposes the product to prolonged soaking, movement, and spinning. This can be hard on the stitching and the various materials in the construction.

Machine washing can also:

  • Affect the strap's shape.
  • Make certain materials stiff.
  • Stress joints and stitching.
  • Cause unnecessary wear and tear.
  • Cause colors to change.

Always follow the care instructions for the specific model. If machine washing is not explicitly permitted, hand cleaning is the safest solution.

Can lifting straps be soaked?

It is generally not recommended to soak straps. Prolonged soaking can affect shape, color, stitching, and composite materials.

Instead, use a damp cloth and clean the dirty areas specifically. If a single treatment is not enough, the process can be repeated once the straps are dry.

What kind of soap can be used?

Use a small amount of mild and preferably fragrance-free soap. The product should not contain bleach or other aggressive cleaning agents.

Avoid, among other things:

  • Bleach.
  • Harsh stain removers.
  • Strong disinfectants.
  • Large amounts of detergent.
  • Fabric softener.

If you are unsure about a cleaning product, you can first test a very small amount on a less visible area.

How to remove odor from lifting straps?

Odor is often caused by damp straps being left in a closed gym bag.

Therefore, start by:

  1. Taking the straps out of the bag after each training session.
  2. Letting them air dry completely.
  3. Cleaning them with a damp cloth and mild soap.
  4. Removing all soap residue.
  5. Letting them dry completely before next use.

Do not attempt to mask the odor with perfume or large amounts of cleaning product. This does not remove the cause and can leave residue against the skin.

How to remove training chalk?

Loose chalk can be removed with a dry cloth or a soft brush. Then, the area can be wiped with a slightly damp cloth.

Avoid aggressive scrubbing. Chalk can be abrasive and create extra friction against the material if rubbed hard into the strap.

How often should lifting straps be cleaned?

There is no single cleaning interval that suits everyone.

The straps should be cleaned when:

  • There is visible sweat, chalk, or dirt.
  • They start to smell.
  • The material feels stiff or sticky.
  • They have been left damp in the bag.
  • They are used by multiple people.

If you use straps several times a week, they may need more frequent cleaning. The most important thing, however, is to let them dry after each training session.

How to store lifting straps

Once the straps are completely dry, they should be stored:

  • In a dry place.
  • Away from direct heat sources.
  • Without being squeezed under heavy training equipment.
  • Without prolonged contact with wet towels or clothes.
  • So that the strap is not sharply folded in the same place every time.

An open or ventilated pocket in the gym bag is better than a closed space with damp training clothes.

Can cleaning extend their lifespan?

Proper cleaning and drying can limit the accumulation of sweat, chalk, and dirt. This can help the straps maintain their comfort and function.

However, cleaning cannot prevent ordinary wear from the bar's surface or repair damaged stitching.

What materials are used in StrapIt?

StrapIt is produced with textile webbing, animal-free bio-leather, and double stitching, among other materials. Because the construction contains different materials, careful surface cleaning is gentler than soaking and machine washing.

MakeIt has produced StrapIt lifting straps in Denmark since 2014. More than 100,000 straps have been sold, and the models are developed with a focus on functionality, comfort, and durability.

Conclusion: How to wash lifting straps?

Clean lifting straps gently with a damp cloth, lukewarm water, and possibly a small amount of mild soap. Remove soap residue, straighten the straps, and let them air dry completely.

Avoid machine washing, soaking, tumble dryers, and direct heat unless the specific care instructions state otherwise.

The most important daily habit is to take the straps out of the gym bag and let them dry after use.
