Short vs. long lifting straps – which should you choose?

Short vs. long lifting straps – which should you choose?

When choosing lifting straps, the difference between short and long models primarily concerns how quickly they can be put on and how much they can be wrapped around the bar. Short and compact straps provide a direct connection and quick setup, while long straps allow for more wraps and a more secure lock.

The right choice therefore depends on your exercises, your hand size, and the feel you prefer around the bar.

The short answer

  • Choose compact StrapIt lifting straps if you want quick setup and a versatile solution for deadlifts, rows, pulldowns, and machines.
  • Choose long lifting straps if you want more wraps around the bar and extra locking for heavy lifts or thicker bars.
  • Choose StrapIt Short if your hands are under 16 cm. Short is a size variant and not only intended for cable training.

What is the difference between short and long lifting straps?

The length affects how many times the strap can be wrapped around the bar, how close the connection feels, and how quickly you can switch between exercises.

Feature Compact StrapIt Long straps
Setup Quick and simple Requires a bit more time
Wrapping Short and direct connection Allows for multiple wraps
Best for Versatile strength training and quick exercise changes Heavy pulls and thicker bars
Typical exercises Rows, pulldowns, machines, and deadlifts Deadlifts, rack pulls, shrugs, and heavy rows

When should you choose long lifting straps?

Long straps have more material that can be wrapped multiple times around the bar. This can provide a more secure connection, but it also takes a little longer to set them up correctly.

Long straps are particularly relevant for:

  • Deadlifts and rack pulls: When lifting heavy and wanting more material around the bar.
  • Romanian deadlifts: When the grip needs to hold through longer sets and controlled repetitions.
  • Heavy rows and shrugs: When the forearms would otherwise limit the work in the back and traps.
  • Thicker bars: When a compact model does not provide the desired amount of wrap.

When should you choose compact StrapIt?

StrapIt models are relevant when you want a quick and direct connection to the bar or handle. They can be used for free weights, machines, and cable exercises, and are a versatile choice if you only want one pair.

They are particularly practical for:

  • Lat pulldown and seated rows.
  • Barbell rows and dumbbell rows.
  • Weight machines and cable exercises.
  • Supersets and training with frequent exercise changes.
  • Regular deadlifts, where you want a simple setup.

Important: StrapIt Short is about hand size

The name StrapIt Short might give the impression that the model is only made for specific exercises. However, the difference between StrapIt Standard and Short primarily concerns hand size and fit.

  • StrapIt Short: Developed for hands under 16 cm or for those who prefer a shorter connection.
  • StrapIt Standard: The natural starting point for hands 16 cm or larger.
  • StrapIt Premium: For hands 16 cm or larger and for those who want a thicker construction with double cotton webbing.

All three models can be used for deadlifts, rows, pulldowns, and other pulling exercises. Therefore, you should not choose Short just because you train on a cable machine.

Can long and compact straps be used for the same exercises?

Yes. Both constructions can be used for most pulling exercises. The difference lies primarily in the setup and the degree of wrapping.

Long straps can be used in cable machines, but the extra material can be impractical for quick changes. Compact StrapIt can be used for heavy deadlifts, but some lifters prefer long straps when they want more wraps around the bar.

Which type should you start with?

  • Do you train varied? Start with StrapIt Standard or Short depending on your hand size.
  • Do you primarily train very heavy pulls? Consider long straps for more wraps.
  • Do you want a thicker StrapIt model? Choose Premium if your hand size fits the model.
  • Do you want maximum flexibility? Use StrapIt for daily training and long straps for the heaviest sets.
